The spring show and sale at the West Nipissing Expressions! Art Gallery saw a resounding turnout on Sunday, May 6th. The flow of traffic was steady throughout the afternoon as an estimated 150-plus people passed through to view the local offerings. The youngest exhibitor was 4-year old Andrée-Michelle Mayhew, who proudly displayed her watercolours alongside seasoned, professional and juried artists and newly engaged adult artists. The showing was an eclectic collection of over 150 pieces by 25 contributors, with everything from painted umbrellas to stone sculpture, paper art and mixed media to the more traditional oils, acrylics, pastels and photography displayed in both levels of the WN Information Centre.

There were also some hands-on activities, with artists showing off some of their techniques in wood-burning, etching, acrylic pouring and umbrella painting. The day offered local artists a chance to be seen, and also to also mingle, share mutual experiences and connect. Many of them found it to be the best show ever, with lots of interaction between artists and guests. Local artist Simone Desormiers commented, “Best show ever, sold three paintings, and have three on commission.”

Some guests said they felt inspired to take up artistic endeavours for themselves; one of the goals of the show was to encourage more people to explore the arts. Local artist Christine Cooling, who received numerous glowing comments for her colourful folk art acrylics depicting Sturgeon Falls scenes, heartily enjoyed her first time showing in West Nipissing. “What a wonderful day! The hospitality displayed through the West Nipissing Art Gallery was overwhelming. I thank you all for the welcome and your generosity. The many talented artists have inspired me and I’m looking forward to many more projects. …I had so much fun…and I’m sure I’ve made some long-term friends.”
