Kelsy Remillard of West Nipissing came home from Orlando, Florida with a trophy bigger than she is. The 7-year-old dancer, daughter of Sarah and Shawn Remillard, thrilled not only her whole family, including aunts and uncles and grandparents, with a top flight performance at the 2017 Showtime Dance Nationals this past July 7th, she also thrilled the judges. The adjudicators moved her from a third place Platinum in the Showdowns so that she ended as the First Runner Up (2nd place position) in the finals in the Novice 8 & Under Solos and was invited to dance at Disney World. Kelsy has been coached, choreographed and costumed by Céline Monforton of Céline’s Dance Academy in Sturgeon Falls.

Kelsy is an incredibly shy young lady with a beaming smile but very few words. Her mother Sarah says that Kelsy expresses herself through dance.

Sarah outlines the steps that garnered Kelsy her coveted spot on the national stage. “Kelsy danced at Deerhurst in April and she got a really good score on her novice solo, and she was invited to dance on the national team at Disney. …She was in Minis [category] last year and competed in two dances.” The solo performance, to the song “I’m cute”, was also the performance she offered at Nationals.

Asked what style her performance was and what she studies, Kelsy responds shyly, “It was a jazz.” She admits she was a little nervous on stage in front of a crowd of hundreds. Her routine was about 2 minutes, she loved the whole experience and plans to keep on competing. “It was cool.”
