You could smell the spaghetti sauce cooking from John St. last Saturday, as the Sturgeon Falls Curling Club hosted a Spaghetti Funspiel. The “fun”spiel is an open curling tournament for the community, aimed at people who have never played the sport before and are looking for an opportunity to learn, enjoy a great meal, make new friends, and most importantly have some fun.

This year’s event boasted 16 teams of four and featured a variety of prizes, games such as floor curling and cards, and music. The overall winner was decided by the best poker hand, after the teams earned cards for each curling game played. Team McLeod (Claude Rivet, Dana McLeod, Diane McLeod and Ron McLeod, pictured) were the winners, having collected a straight.

The Funspiel also doubles as a fundraiser for the West Nipissing Food Bank, as teams were asked to bring non-perishable food items to participate. Through entry fees, 50/50 ticket sales and cash donations, over $2,000 was also raised for the food bank.
