SF Curling Club hosts provincial tourney

by Brad Aubin

The Sturgeon Falls Curling Club was a busy place from January 15-19, as it hosted the Northern Ontario Curling Association’s Senior Provincial Championship. The event featured 14 teams from across Northern Ontario - 8 men’s and 6 women’s teams. All competed for the honour of representing Northern Ontario at the 2020 Everest Canadian Senior Curling Championships in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba in March.

Event Organizer and Club Vice President Louise Gauthier was pleased at how the tournament unfolded. “We had no major hitches, or anything like that. We had an amazing team. Our ice crews were out at 6 am every day, after every practice, after every four ends, they put in 12-15 hour days the whole time. I would say we had in excess of 40 volunteers who helped us between the ice, the umpires on the ice, time keepers, bar tenders, and lots of others who kept the place and parking lot tidy, communicated with spouses and friends of the teams to keep them informed of some results, and even some who provided transportation from and back to the airport for the well-travelled teams. It was an incredible team experience!”
