The West Nipissing Santa Fund Telethon did it again, surpassing its $30,000 target and galvanizing the community with Christmas spirit this past Sunday, Nov. 25. The event packed the Marcel Noël Hall for a good five hours of live action, was broadcast on YouTube and U-Stream, and provided opportunity for young and old to share their talent while raising funds for the West Nipissing Fire Service volunteer fire fighters’ annual toy drive and Christmas baskets.

Fire Chief Richard Maranda provided a final tally on Tuesday, November 27. “We have $30,289.51 in grand total; $28,534.51 in pledges and $1,755 raised from auction items. And there will be more coming in!” Maranda says that it’s typical that donations continue to come in following the telethon. “We’re already up $175 from that total since yesterday.”

Maranda was overwhelmed by the number of volunteers who made the event a success, but adds that the program is now well oiled with practice. “It’s unreal! First of all, John Dobbs and Lisa Dumont, our MCs, and their [back-ups] Serge Larabie and Joanne Bazinet from Northern and Dan Marleau and [Patrick] Vaillancourt from Franco [Cité], were awesome… and then answering the phones we had Franco-Cité, Northern, Banque nationale, Au Château, Community Living… those [groups] each took over the phones for an hour. And then Franco-Cité did all the video for YouTube.”
