Over 200 Special Olympians from across the region gathered at the Northern Track and Field grounds this past Saturday, June 23 for the Special Olympic Regionals track meet. In addition to helping the North Bay Special Olympics host the event on the Sturgeon Falls track, West Nipissing had a strong delegation of 13 competitors who took 35 first place ribbons and 14 second places.

“It was a beautiful day,” beams coach Jackie Truchon. “The event went on from 9am to 3pm for the last regional meet of the summer. We had all kinds of track and field events and we had 13 athletes compete and do a phenomenal job! (…) I’m proud of all of our West Nipissing athletes for their efforts.”

The athletes now get a bit of a break before training resumes for winter events. “That’s it for the summer now as we relax a bit before starting to practice for our Winter Regionals in September. We actually have five athletes who qualified to participate in Provincials come wintertime, but we’re not allowed to share who they are yet! We’re very excited! I want to thank everyone who came out and supported us throughout the summer and who donated to allow our athletes to compete year after year. We couldn’t do this without all of West Nipissing’s help,” Truchon concludes.
