Anne Spencer has got Verner dancing to a Latin beat. The certified Zumba instructor has been offering Zumba to residents of Verner for some time now, but under recent Covid-19 conditions, she’s taken the classes outside, and people in Verner have been responding with great enthusiasm. It’s become a family activity, with moms and kids, and even dads and brothers joining in. It’s wonderfully fun to watch and participate in, while social distancing at the same time.

On Thursday, September 10, Spencer had her largest class ever - 43 participants spread out over the Verner arena parking lot. “It was fun!” she giggles. She has been a certified instructor for 10 years, explaining that Zumba is an aerobic dance exercise using the rhythms of salsa, reggaeton, merengue, samba, hip hop, and cumbia. Her classes are usually about an hour long. Taking the classes outdoors was in response to the restrictions imposed by Covid-19.

“It’s a new thing. I had no choice but to shut my doors in March, but people were missing it. I tried it on the ball field to begin with and we had 10 people the first class. The word has spread and people have since been coming as families and it’s been nice to see!”
